les erugues processionàries

Dear ROSAMAR property owners,

We wish to inform you of a situation regarding processionary caterpillars in our urbanization. It has come to the attention of the board that a group of owners has requested your signature for a petition addressed to the EUC concerning this issue.

We want to reassure you: it is not necessary to send your signature to this group of owners. In fact, the EUC has already been addressing this issue for 15 days. A specialized company has intervened and will install traps on the affected trees. However, these traps are not as effective as the usual annual fumigation, so a risk remains.

The absence of fumigation this year is due to a complaint made by this group of owners to the agriculture department regarding the company that usually handles the fumigation of our cove. After verification, it was found that the treatment company was perfectly compliant. However, following this incident, they no longer wish to intervene in our urbanization. We had to be very persuasive to ask them to come and set traps.

We are installing as many traps as possible, about fifty, but given the extent of the contamination, it will be almost impossible to control the caterpillars this year. We ask all of you to be very careful from now on with your animals and we also encourage you to tell your children and loved ones not to approach the caterpillars.

It is crucial to highlight the serious risks associated with processionary caterpillars, particularly for children, the elderly, and animals:

  • General risks for humans

The urticating hairs of processionary caterpillars can cause various reactions:

    • Skin irritations: redness, intense itching, pain, localized edema, and sometimes small blisters
    • Eye problems: conjunctivitis, tearing, pain
    • Respiratory disorders: cough, respiratory discomfort, difficulty breathing

These reactions can occur even without direct contact, as the urticating hairs easily detach and can be carried by the wind.

  • Specific risks for children and the elderly

Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable due to their natural curiosity, more sensitive skin, and potentially weakened immune systems. Complications can be more severe in these populations.

  • Risks for animals

Animals can suffer from skin irritations, eye lesions that can lead to blindness, swelling and necrosis of the tongue, as well as respiratory difficulties. In severe cases, exposure can be fatal without prompt veterinary care.

To prevent this situation from recurring and ensure our safety, we will propose a vote for automatic annual fumigation at the next general assembly. It is also about respecting everyone's opinions and the solutions to be implemented to address this severe health problem.

A challenge persists regarding owners who have contaminated trees on their property and refuse to treat them. We are actively working to resolve this issue, even offering our services for treatment.
