Volunteer work and free solutions

First of all, it is important to note that the development and maintenance of this site are carried out entirely by volunteers from our association. This represents a significant saving in labor costs, as the services of a professional for such a project would have been very expensive.

To go even further in reducing costs, we have chosen free and open source technological solutions for hosting and deploying the site:

  • Pelican: The site is built with Pelican, a static site generator. This technology is simple, efficient, and above all, it does not require a complex database or an expensive server.
  • GitLab: The source code is hosted on GitLab, a collaborative platform that offers us free "runner" minutes. These "runners" are virtual machines that take care of generating the website files, which automates and simplifies updates.
  • Cloudflare Pages: Once generated, the site files are hosted on Cloudflare Pages. This solution is not only free, but it also ensures excellent performance and fast display speeds for all visitors, all over the world.

The only cost: our domain name

The only expense for our website is the domain name. This is the unique address you type into your browser (www.rosamar.cat). This purchase, made from the French company OVHcloud, cost €54.92 for 4 years.

This one-time investment is necessary for our site to have its own identity and be easily memorable for all members.

In conclusion

Thanks to volunteer work and the smart use of free and open source technologies, we have succeeded in creating and maintaining a functional and efficient website with a minimal total cost. The only investment was €54.92 for our domain name, which represents excellent value for money for such an essential communication tool for our association.
